A break. Runner’s haitus… and other updates.

I think that’s where I’m at right now.

But I feel so bad that I haven’t been running!

Earlier this week, I had intended to get a run in before my doctor’s appointment, and since I was short on time, I couldn’t. I had to get a holter monitor to monitor my heartbeat since sometimes it flutters (but, I swear, everything else is okay – doctor just wanted to be sure!). Since I had to wear this monitor for two days, and could not shower (ugh, tell me about it), that means nix on the running. Tell me I’m not the only one that gets extremely salty and sweaty during my runs? Yeah.

So I continued on with my yoga. As of today, I have completed 11 days of the 30 day challenge; I’ve been consistent. I’ve been getting flexible. Each day I can do poses that I wouldn’t normally be able to do. I’ve been feeling good. I can hold a crow pose for about a fraction of a second. I definitely couldn’t do that two weeks ago.

Yoga is definitely changing me. It’s changing the way I feel, the way I breathe, think. It’s even changing my posture – in a positive way. 🙂

But with running… I don’t know what it is. After having a solid running schedule since Spring 2013, I think I do need a break. Don’t elite runners also have some down time too? I wonder.

I still have full intentions to run a half marathon this fall too.

If anything, my plan is to start training in June.

Again, I’m not giving up on running altogether, but I don’t think I will be as active with it for the time being. I really don’t plan on making this a permanent thing. Nothing can replace a good run. Honestly, I’m craving a long distance slow run. But after having plans consistently for the past couple of weekends, and then Vegas and Disneyland the coming weeks, this is my first weekend just relaxing. Enjoying myself. Since I’ve been back from Germany I feel as if there’s always something to do, and I’m just exhausted! Tomorrow, I will start off the day with a yoga sequence, and then go for a swim in the afternoon.

In other news, earlier this week I also found out that I GOT INTO THE GRAD PROGRAM I WANTED! With a tough call between mastering in history or library science, I decided to go with the MLIS because it would provide me with the skill that I need. With that said, I also plan on volunteering at the local library during the summer to get some more experience under my belt; I recently quit volunteering at the museum in LA simply because it was too far.

Anyway, I hope that everyone has had a great weekend – tomorrow is Sunday! Time to bask in the happiness of what’s left of the weekend.

Till next time,

The Snack File: Trader Joe’s Vanilla Almond Clusters

Well, of course it’d be another Trader Joe’s item. I haven’t done a SNACK FILE in so long, I figured I might as well do one with one of my favorite things to eat for breakfast!

If you’re a fan of Honey Bunches of Oats, then you’ll definitely become a fan of this yummy cereal! IMO, it’s actually better than HBoO because it has larger, crunchy clusters and larger, crunchy flakes! Meaning – you will be satisfied with a small portion in a small bowl.

The cereal is a tad bit on the sweet side, so to even it out, I typically add some tart fruit to it: strawberries or blueberries. This cereal also tastes amazing with bananas… as of course, bananas and almond go well together!

At around 210 calories per cup, it’s not a bad option for breakfast and refueling and I guarantee you that you will stay full until lunch time! A much better option than a bagel and cream cheese, because those make me hungry within an hour!FullSizeRender

Got my miles in!

As hesitant as I was… I got it done. After such a long week, I really didn’t want to do anything this morning but stay in and drink coffee and be cozy. But… of course, I had an itch to run. I was tempted to go on the treadmill to do my run but instead I decided to go outside. It was actually a really nice morning. Since I was still pretty lazy and wanted to just grocery shop and get my day over with, I ran a little over 3 miles in under 30 minutes.

My pace per mile when I run outside is just awesome: 9:47. I strongly feel that this is because of all the speed training I do on the treadmill. Hey, I guess the dreadmill isn’t too bad! Might be slow on it, but off it, I’m faster than I expected!

Tomorrow, it’s off to LA again to volunteer at the museum. The experience-building grind is real!

With that, I’ll end that I finally received my March issue of Runner’s World in the mail today! Where January and February is though… I wonder. It’s funny because I actually just paid my subscription yesterday. 😉

Happy Saturday!

Till next time,

P.

With December comes too much comfort… and extra cups of coffee.

I don’t know what it is about this time of year, but lately, I’ve just been wanting to curl up in a blanket on the sofa, watching Christmas movies next to the Christmas tree.

It’s exactly what I’m doing right now.

I’ve also been wanting to sleep in more, so I’ve just been going to the gym right after work. Surprisingly, I got 4 miles on the treadmill earlier this week – I usually get bored after 2!

AND… since we got a Keurig in the office, I’ve been having two cups of coffee a day: one in the morning, and in the evening. The extra caffeine has me staying up much later, then resulting in me not being to wake up as early.

But I’ve been bargaining with myself. I’ve trained hard all summer and have been consistent with my training / running, why not enjoy a little down time?

But of course, that doesn’t mean to stop running altogether. 🙂

I haven’t ran outside since the race last Saturday, so today I decided to go try a new route. The treadmill really can’t replace running outside – it’s just so much better! Instead of waking up before 8 (like I usually do), I slept in a bit, enjoyed some pancakes, and didn’t get started on my run till about 11. An upside to this time of the year: running any time during the day because it’s cold out!

After my run, I went to Trader Joe’s and did some grocery shopping. Right when I got back, I couldn’t wait to eat some snacks – I was starving! I also had to wash it down with a post-run beer. 🙂

Pita Bite Crackers are my absolute FAVORITE! They go with everything. TJ's Tomato Basil Hummus is also delicious - I also used it as a dip for the cherry tomatoes!

Once again, Trader Joe’s prevails.

I still haven’t signed up for the 10k in January.. I should get on that before registration goes up!

I hope everyone’s had a great weekend so far!

Till next time,

2 workouts this week, 2 more to go!

So this week, I’ve really been trying to stay on track. On Monday, I ran, and last night, I kept my word and went to the gym to use the weight machines for 45 minutes..

And whew, I have to say I’m a tad bit sore!

But it feels good. On the machines where I had to use my arms, it was tough. As I’ve mentioned before, I absolutely have no upper body strength. I spent some time doing some pull downs, chest presses, rowing, as well as some free lifting with the dumbells. Of course, due to the lack of strength, all the weights I tried were 20 lbs. and under. 😛

I found that the machines I used for my legs were significantly easier. Duh. I sense some unbalance here. I used the leg press, leg extension, leg curl, and the leg adduction / abduction machine.

Okay, so I definitely had to look up the names for these specific machines because I am nowhere near familiar with these machines, with the exception of a few. At least I had the gym to myself last night, so I didn’t embarrass myself when I had to figure out how to work some of them. Ha.

For dinner last night, I made some chicken brocolli bake. While it looked good, I was a bit meh about it. I had to cut myself some slack though because it was my first time making it. I know now to cut the chicken into smaller pieces, and use something other than cream of chicken because I did not like it. I might omit the rice too next time: the texture reminded me too much of porridge, which I do not like. I sprinkled some french onion on top, and honestly, that and the brocolli were my favorite part of it all.

It still looked good though, at least!

Also, because I had been contemplating which race to run for Thanksgiving, I finally decided on one a town away – mainly because it was only $25 AND I was guaranteed a shirt. If I was getting no bling, I at least wanted a souvenir. Sadly, the 5k closer to me had a higher registration price (I missed it before the prices went up!) and it wasn’t guaranteed I would be getting a shirt, so boo. Oh well. The 5k I ended up signing for is actually right near the mountains, so I’m pretty excited for how that course is going to look like!

So hooray, I have my next race next week! Which means… I need to really get some running time in before next Thursday! No excuses!

Till next time,

Working through the work week, and GREAT news!

So I managed to complete my workouts for the work week! Hooray for finally getting back on track!

I had Tuesday off for Veterans Day, so I decided to roam around the town and see what was around. I planned a 5k route, and went on my way.

It was a really nice, overcast morning – as it has been all week. FALL has finally reached SoCal! Not long after I started my run, I ran into my fellow runner neighbor! She was just finishing up her 10k route, and after catching up a bit we parted ways.

I turned a corner and I found myself in the Claremont Colleges. It was such a beautiful area! I couldn’t help but snap some photos along the way.

I find it really awesome that I live near such a beautiful college campus! What’s interesting is that the graduate school that I had always been interested in attending, Claremont Graduate University, is in this area as well. Perhaps during my next run, I’ll plan a route so I would be able to check it out!

Meanwhile, I got so distracted admiring the scenery that I missed the street I was supposed to turn on, and went a bit down further. My 5k run ended up becoming a 4-miler! What’s funny is that it didn’t even feel like I ran 4 miles. I guess that’s just how it feels when you run in a completely new area, and you’re more exploring than working out!

ALSO: after I had gotten back from my run, I checked my voicemail since I had missed a call during my run. It turns out, a booth had opened up for us at the Frankfurt trade show! After being on the wait list for months, I can finally officially say… I’M GOING TO GERMANY IN FEBRUARY!!!!! My dream is finally coming true!!! The trade show is in exactly THREE MONTHS, which means my coworker and I have a lot of planning to do! AND I have to get to practicing my German again! Weee! I’m so excited!!!!!

Phew. Okay. Now that’s out the way.

*breathe*

Today, I had a 20 minute tempo run to do. I found it really hard to get up this morning, so I saved my workout until after I got home. After my boyfriend left for his class, I decided to try the new gym, since I still haven’t gone!

Hello, beautiful.
Hello, beautiful.

I ended up having the gym ALL TO MYSELF. YES. I ran on the treadmill for 20 minutes, faster than usual, so I could get 2 miles done within the time frame. I don’t think I’ve ever ran that fast on a treadmill before. Sometimes, I amaze myself. After my run, I went on the weight machines for a bit – need to work on the arms, after all.

Afterwards, I gulped a cup of water down and headed to the yoga room to do some stretches.

Hi there!
Hi there!

THIS. GYM. IS. AMAZING. Since this gorgeous facility IS included in my rent, I might as well utilize it. The treadmill is perfect for speedwork, and I can also work on my upper body. Let’s just say, I might be hitting the gym more this winter…

Meanwhile, I am now showered, relaxed, and full after gobbling down some yummy Pad Thai for dinner. 🙂

Friday tomorrow!

Till next time,

P.

I am almost there, I am at the in-between.

I don’t even know how to describe exactly how I feel right now.

Not that I feel anything negative, of course not. I’m as peppy as can be (especially since it’s almost the weekend again – YES!), but I guess I’m more nervous because my half marathon is coming up.. and fast! On Monday, I received an email with my information regarding bib pickup at the Expotique in downtown San Francisco… Like I said, fast.

I’m feeling excited: I can envision grabbing the Tiffany box from a handsome firefighter and taking endless photos of my sweet victory as I clutch the blue boxed beauty tightly in my hand.

And then I feel dread: what if something happens while I’m running? What if I run much slower than I trained for? What if I have to use to port-a-potty a lot, AND wait in line for a long time? What if I trip? What if I sprain my ankle?! WHAT IF I GET SICK? i better not sit next to anyone on the plane that has a cold. Blah. Just so, so many thoughts.

And then I feel anxious: I just want to start it, do it, and be done with it.

Other thoughts:

Negative splits, FTW. Take it easy. I should buy a whole new running outfit just for this race – perhaps something blue. I need to watch what I eat the night before. I need to get a good night’s rest before. I need to make it on time. I CANNOT BE LATE.

My mind has just been clouded with so many emotions, that the only thing I know that will help me feel better is to go for a run.

I did a short 5k yesterday morning because I didn’t want to rush getting ready before work. I enjoyed the extra time, making myself a cup of coffee and some eggs before getting changed. Tomorrow, I plan on doing 4 miles. 5 on Saturday (OR go on the elliptical), and 8 on Sunday.

My training schedule for next week is really lax. There’s a 5k I think on Tuesday, and a 15 min. run on Friday or Saturday before the race, to get my blood moving. I’ve already been discussing with my sister how we’re going to get to the Expotique, and all the things we’re going to check out while we’re there.

Sigh.

I just need to chill.

Because now, I’m starting to feel like I’m getting sick. :X
